The Four Mottos (or Slogans)
These focus on the unique transmission of Zen beyond doctrine:
1.
A special transmission outside the teachings: Zen passes truth directly,
not solely through written scriptures.
2. No dependence on words and letters: Ultimate reality can't be fully
grasped by language.
3. Directly pointing to the human mind: Truth is found within one's own
consciousness.
4. Seeing into one's nature and attaining Buddhahood: Realizing your
inherent Buddha-nature leads to enlightenment.
